There are so many things to love about Palm Beach County. From the beaches to the numerous parks and free or inexpensive family activities offered, there are countless blessings in life here. Recently I stumbled upon a wonderful activity that is going on in our community, and I wanted to tell you all about it.
A few weeks ago, my daughters and I were at a local park and my three-year-old Gabby picked up a rock (as usual) and said, “Mommy! Look at my treasure!” At first I didn’t even glance over because she’s obsessed with nature objects in general and is constantly picking up sticks, flowers, pebbles, leaves and pinecones. This time, however, she brought it over to me and I was surprised to see a rock, a painted rock. It had some writing on it and I said “Wow, that’s cool!” My oldest daughter immediately knew what it was from talking with some other kids at another playground.
“Mom, that’s one of those painted rocks people are making and hiding for other people to find. Now she needs to hide it for someone else.”
My mom friends at the park saw it and told me there is a Facebook group for this fun community-wide hide-and-seek called “PBC Rocks (Palm Beach County Rocks)”. I looked it up and found many of my friends were already part of this group. Come join the fun! Here’s how, from the Pinned Post in the group:
“Get some acrylic paint, sealant, brushes, rocks and…that’s all you need. Make sure your rocks are smooth, if you need to rub them down with a towel (but don’t worry about water because then they might absorb it). Paint your rock in halves – top and bottom; so you can dry each side individually. To help the group grow and add to the fun, write ‘PBC Rocks Facebook’ or something similar on the back of your rock. When you’re done painting and drying both sides, you’ll want to seal and dry each side. Then hide. Others will find your rock and smile. They can keep it or re-hide it.”
Now, I have to tell you. Miss Gabby has decided to keep her rock. She thinks it’s just about the best thing she ever found. So one of our first summer projects will be painting some of these rocks for others to find. It really did make us smile to find one. You can also post a pictures of the rocks you find on the Facebook group so that the original artists might be able to follow their rocks.
I keep thinking about these rocks and the idea behind it. In our modern world that sometimes can seem so cold and media-focused, this is a tangible way to bring joy into someone’s life. This person is probably someone you don’t already know, and you might not ever know. This activity is a fun way for families to do some art together and then give it away to bless another family or individual. Now you can see why Palm Beach County Rocks ROCKS!
Have you already hid some rocks? Have any tips for beginners? Let me know in the comment section!

I unexpectedly ran into my first rock at cvs on hypoluxo, it’s painted purple and says “Tea Time” with a tea pot and cup / on the back it’s #pbcrocks . I can’t lie I was looking at it for a few minutes before I even decided to pick it but as soon as I decided to I smiled… This has definitely encouraged me to make a few and plant them in hopes to brighten up someone’s day.
