As a long-time stay at home mom, for many years I’ve longed to find a way to work from home to supplement our family’s income. Though I tried searching, I just never found the “right” opportunity. Although many of my friends have done well with them, I personally never felt the right fit with any of the MLM sales-based businesses. One night I was searching online and I found this company called VIPKid mentioned over and over. I recalled that I had seen one of my friends from college post about it on social media, and decided to look more into it.
As I read about the company, I was impressed.
In 2018 VIPKid was listed as the Forbes #1 Work From Home Job. VIPKID offers the unique opportunity to teach English to Chinese students 1-on-1. They provide the platform, training, and lessons and you provide your energy and speaking ability for the students to practice conversation. You are paid per 25 minute class. The peak times for being booked for classes 5 am – 9 am EST on weekdays (during the school year) and many peak more times are booked on weekends, nights, and school breaks. The pay is typically between $14-22/hr. You have complete control over your schedule and how much (or little) you want to work each week.
When I began to watch YouTube videos and learn more about the hiring process, I felt intimidated. I had never taught in a regular classroom before and my degree is not in education. However, I have worked with children in many other capacities, as well as homeschooling my own children. Would this company even want to hire me?
I looked at their requirements and mentally checked off the boxes:
- A Bachelor’s degree in any field.
- The equivalent of at least 1 year “teaching experience“. This does NOT necessarily mean teaching in a regular classroom. Teaching experience can come from coaching, mentoring, volunteering, homeschooling, and other activities working with children.
- The eligibility to work in the United States or Canada. This does NOT mean you must teach from here, as there are VIPKid teachers all over the globe.
Next, I found that friend from college and used her referral code to sign up. I did read that it can be very helpful to work with an existing teacher throughout the hiring process, and I was glad that I did.
