The journey of motherhood, especially for first time moms can be unchartered territory filled with so many questions that arise along the way. With the joy that expecting a child brings, this can sometimes also be a confusing and worrisome time for expectant parents. Luckily, there is someone to turn to who will be right there by your side.

At the Birthcare Pavilion at West Boca Medical Center, they understand the emotions that a new mom might be experiencing. Along with their team of highly trained obstetrics-gynecologists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, nurses and nurse practitioners, lactation counselors, certified midwives, anesthesiologists, ultrasound technicians, and social workers, there is also a maternity nurse navigator on staff who will comfort and guide expectant parents on every step of the way — from pregnancy through the birth of their new baby and beyond.

Moms-to-be deserve personal attention that will help ensure their pregnancy is as stress free as possible. That’s where the maternity nurse navigator comes in. She will assist patients in understanding what classes are available, how to get prepared for the birth and their new baby, and what to expect during the hospital stay and more.

A maternity nurse navigator is a registered nurse who wears many hats; she is a liaison, a counselor and an advocate for her patients. As a liaison, she works closely with her patient’s physicians to establish collaboration and coordination of care for a seamless, personalized experience. She will educate her patients and ensure that all questions and concerns are resolved. First time moms will appreciate the guidance and reassurance that the navigator can provide, while high-risk moms can benefit from the navigator’s knowledge and assistance in developing complex birth plans to facilitating neonatal care consultations. The patient navigator will advocate for her patients during every phase of treatment and can also direct them to local resources and support if needed. Registered nurse Debby Putnam, West Boca Medical Center’s maternity navigator enjoys helping families in our community grow, and stated “As a maternity nurse navigator, I not only provide comfort to patients, I am a resource and provide expectant parents with the knowledge to help them develop a customized birth plan that best meet their needs and desires.”

A maternity navigator is needed now more than ever. With the coronavirus pandemic, many pregnant women have a lot of questions about how their birthing experience might need to change from what they were expecting, and how they may be able to protect themselves and their baby. At West Boca Medical Center, the hospital has numerous procedures in place to optimize the health and safety of patients and their family members, as well as medical staff.
